Pioneers of Bourbon Barrel-Aged beers, Goose Island recently turned their hand to wine barrel aging, with some truly remarkable results. Following the success of Sofie, a deliciously crisp Saison aged in Chardonnay barrels, the Michigan brewery launched a string of equally elegant barrel-aged brews, including Juliet, a blackberry-infused Belgian Sour Ale.
Aged in Cabernet barrels with indecent quantities of blackberries, Juliet has a seductive fruits-of-the-forest quality from the word go. This sour fruit character is offset by a ripe brett yeast bouquet and conspicuous oakiness to rival any red wine.
On the palate, you’re met by more sharp brett notes, followed by a burst of ripe berry fruitiness and hints of citrus that make this Pinot Noir inspired sour a truly gourmet beer.
